BASF awards additional $10,000 in scholarships to LSU engineering students
Team Chemistry scholarships total $25,000 for the school year
GEISMAR, LA, April 17, 2014 — BASF has awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to four outstanding engineering students at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as part of the BASF Team Chemistry Scholarship Fund.
“These scholarships benefit not only the recipients and the university, but BASF as well,” said Tom Yura, Senior Vice President and Manager of the BASF site in Geismar, Louisiana. “We need bright students, such as the ones who receive these scholarships, who are focusing on careers in engineering and science, to serve as the next generation of leaders for our industry.”
The BASF Team Chemistry Scholarship Fund has awarded a total of $25,000 for the 2013-2014 school year. In addition to the scholarships, the company recently announced a $1 million donation to establish the BASF Sustainable Living Laboratory as part of the engineering expansion project for LSU’s College of Engineering, and a $100,000 donation to support the construction of the new LSU Olinde Career Center that will open this year.
“BASF and LSU’s College of Engineering have partnered to support tomorrow’s leaders through the BASF Team Chemistry Scholarship Fund,” said Rick Koubek, Dean of LSU’s College of Engineering. “Thanks to BASF’s investment, the Team Chemistry Scholarship winners will receive additional resources to enhance their academic careers and later make an impact in their professions and their communities.”
The students, who each received a $2,500 scholarship from BASF, have displayed academic success in their fields of study and are active members on the LSU campus and in the community:
Vanessa Beall, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering, is a resident of Prairieville, Louisiana. Beall mentors young pregnant and parenting teen mothers, like herself, to ensure they are on the right path to success. Despite the challenges of being a teen mother, Beall maintains a 3.8 GPA at LSU while working part time. She plans to graduate from LSU in 2017.
Natalie Burges, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering with an environmental concentration, is from Katy, Texas. Burges is enrolled in the university’s Honors College and serves as an LSU Ambassador. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers, LSU Engineers without Borders, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Buges’ academic recognitions include the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Richard L. O’Shields Engineering Endowed Scholarship, William L. Jenkins Honors Scholarship and the Academic Scholars Nonresident Award Scholarship. She plans to graduate from LSU in 2017.
Jonathan Hoffmann is a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering. An Eagle Scout from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he is currently employed by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as a computer lab supervisor. He is a recipient of LSU’s Academic Scholars Resident Award and is pursing certification in LSU’s Distinguished Communicator Program. Hoffmann plans to graduate from LSU in May 2017.
Robert Quiring, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in business administration, is a resident of Lafayette, Louisiana . He has made the chancellor’s honor roll and the dean’s honor roll multiple semesters. He works part-time for the LSU Flores MBA program while serving in a leadership role for his fraternity Beta Upsilon Chi. He plans to graduate from LSU in May 2016.
BASF presented the scholarships to the students and recognized them at Alex Box Stadium during the recent LSU baseball game against Mississippi State University on Saturday, April 5.
