Macon’s GEICO associates take 327 million steps towards better health
MACON, Ga., January 6, 2015 – With a little camaraderie and competition, GEICO’s Macon on the Move wellness program has inspired more than 877 associates to take a step towards improving their health through walking each day. Using a clip-on or wristband Fitbit device, Macon associates are tracking their own steps and tallying departmental milestones to foster friendly competition between teams.
Started in early October, the program caught on quickly, encouraging associates to walk more each month. As of late December, associates had walked approximately 148,404 miles—almost six times the Earth’s circumference.
Currently, associates are challenged not only to improve month over month, but to reach 166 miles, the distance from the GEICO office to Savannah. Nearly 395 ambitious associates have already reached this goal with a number of their colleagues at their heels.
“We think programs such as this encourage people to invest in their personal health in a simple and fun way,” said Scott Markel, GEICO’s regional vice president of Midwest operations in Macon. “We have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback since starting the program, and this investment will help hundreds of our associates make personal wellness an easy choice.”
With more than 327 million steps taken by associates to date, GEICO hopes to continue the Fitbit frenzy and enroll 1,200 associates in the program by February 2015.
